According to reports, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), after a growth in power production capacity available with the national grid, has increased electricity tariff by 2 percent for all sets of users with effect from 1st October, this year.
Meanwhile, the group has restructured power tariff for all eight distribution firms as well as KESC.
The central government has dissolved the Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) as part of its energy reforms, and the financial as well as administrative powers have been assigned to the distribution firms called MEPCO, LESCO, FESCO and IESCO.
While talking to media, Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, PEPCO has been dissolved as it was about to loose billion of rupees per year. He said, “All the distribution companies had been made independent and these would be responsible for power supply, revenue and other matters.”
In the meantime, a navigations group has been called to oversee this process.
Mr. Ashraf said, “Our government believes in protecting the rights of workers which will not be allowed to be harmed. When these companies will become able to stand on their feet, we will raise salaries.”
To diminish the gap between NEPRA’s determined tax and consumer’s end-tariff, the administration has decided to keep a balance in public interest and has decided to move on only 2% revision in power tax.
