A race of giants have mutant gene that was first emerged around 1,500 years ago and causes uncontrolled body growth.
The ‘gigantism gene’ in DNA was identified in 18 century man known as ‘Irish Giant’ who was almost eight feet tall.
The ‘Irish Giant’ was Charles Byrne born in Littlebridge, Northern Ireland, in 1761.
After the death of Byrne, his skeleton remains at the Hunterian Museum at London headquarters of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Now the researchers have isolated a common gene mutation which can lead to gigantism.
Same mutated copies of genes as in the ancestors have been found in 200 to 300 today’s living patients who are suffering from gigantism which shows the symptoms of over-growth.
Leading researcher Dr Marta Korbonits informed that they have discovered one of those who shared the genetic mutation with Byrne is Tyrone man Brendan Holland who is 6 feet 9inches tall.
The results have been published in the New England Journal of Medicines.
Now British and German scientists are conducting new research on extracted DNA from two of the Irish Giant’s teeth.
